In 2004, the average cost of a kitchen remodel in the United States was $30,000. Of course, the majority of these included top of the line materials such as granite and copper, but still the fact remains that remodeling a kitchen is expensive. So it stands to reason that you could save a bundle by remodeling your own kitchen.

This isn't entirely the case. Doing It Yourself (DIY) is a great way to save money while learning a new skill and learning a lot about your home. Many people enjoy working with their hands, getting absorbed in a project, and seeing the fruits of their efforts. Saving money is often an ancillary benefit to these personality types. Yet there are others who either can't afford or aren't willing to pay what professionals charge, and they are going to do their own painting, tiling, decking, and yardwork themselves.

Kitchen Remodel DIY
The kitchen, however, is not a place to try to cut corners. First, it involves nearly every type of home material except roofing. A kitchen includes plumbing, electrical, gas pipes, appliances, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, drywall, and paint. Seems like a lot. Now consider that the first thing potential homebuyers look at is the kitchen, after how many beds and baths there are.

Most parties start and continue in the kitchen, plus if you like to cook, this is where you'll be. With a DIY project, you are giving up some quality of the work in what you can gain by saving on labor costs. The kitchen just imposes too much knowledge, too much experience, and too many variables to really be attempted by the average, determined homeowner. A better idea to save money on home remodeling would be to build your own deck, do your own painting, or hanging your own sheetrock. By saving money in these areas, you can put that saved money toward a kitchen or bath remodel.

Kitchen DIY Verdict
This is, more than any other place, the room for the pros to handle. There is too much that can go wrong, and too many different areas to know about, to really be able to achieve the level of quality that you need at this price. However, there are some things you can do for minor remodels that can improve your homes' appearance.

Minor Kitchen Remodels
A different color of paint can dramatically change the look of a room. This is something you can do for under $100. Because of all the cabinets, there usually isn't too much to paint, so the job will be fairly small.

Tiling the floor or the counters is a unique remodel that is easy to maintain and clean once installed. Buy an old table and tile the top of it as practice before moving on. The tiles themselves are pretty expensive, but nothing looks better than new tile, not to mention that you are saving on labor costs.

Beyond these few things, the kitchen is just such a high value room that it might be a mistake to work on it if you don't know what you're doing. Do small remodels first before stepping up into larger ones. Good luck!
